The launch of Girls in Tech Nigeria was held on Saturday 25th of October 2014 at the iDEA Hub in Lagos, Nigeria. Dupe Darabidan, Co-Managing Director of GIT Nigeria gave a short talk on why we need more girls in Tech, then we had a short introduction from our partners (Idea Nigeria by Joshua Audu and Microsoft by Olusola Amusan and Eremi Idienumah). The Managing Director GIT Nigeria, Tosin Oguntuyi unveiled Girls in Tech Nigeria our history, mission and vision stating that Girls in Tech encourages women and girls to embrace their femininity and unique qualities as strengths in both professional and personal environments via various programmes which include Mentorship programmes, Hackathons, Networking events, Conferences and many more.
Microsoft Nigeria gave away notepads and computer mice during a question and answer session. Guests watched a short video clip which was an interview of different women working in the technology space and why they chose a career in technology after which we had an interactive session asking the girls what they wanted to become when they were younger.
We then had the guest speaker Gbenga Sesan Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative Nigeria, he talked on Girls in Tech the future and he emphasized on crushing the “boys code and girls clean fallacy”. Guests went home with flash drives, stickers, stress bulbs, pens thanks to OpenSUSE.
